Amarawati: In a massive move to spruce up public transport at Visakhapatnam, Rs 8,000 cr light metro rail project has got clearance from the state and central government. The light metro rail project will be undertaken under PPP model with Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC) bearing 50% cost. The other 50% will be undertaken by private partner. Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) will be overseeing the operations.

As per the project, in the first phase that metro will be constructed and will cover a distance of 42.54 km from Gajuwaka to Kommadi. With this project getting green signal, Visakhapatnam residents will be able to travel with ease in the light metro.

The estimated cost for setting up the first line of metro rail line is approximately around Rs 8,000 crore.

As per the agreement signed between parties, AMRC will bear half the cost while the other half will be financed under PPP model. VUDA will be overseeing the operations of the light metro rail project. This good news came into limelight with the managing director N P Ramakrishna Reddy of AMRC meeting the P Narayana, Minister for Municipal Administration.

P Basanth Kumar, vice-chairman VUDA while interacting with media stated that a detailed project report (DPR) is been worked out and will be sent to the necessary departments.

It was in January that the Andhra Pradesh government had sent a request to centre to give their nod for the construction of metro rail projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. This request was sent by N Chandrababu Naidu, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The request was submitted when Naidu was in New Delhi to attend a meeting.

Reddy in October had confirmed that pre-bidding was held for VMR and around 11 reputed international and national consultants had shown interest in the project.

India’s ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan who was also working as an advisor to the Andhra Pradesh government on Vizag  and Vijayawada metro rail projects has already submitted resignation to the state government. This has only complicated things but residents are hopeful that work on light metro line begins soon.
