
CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): While presenting the Revised Budget for the year 2021-2022, Finance Minister of the Tamil Nadu Government, Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan made an announcement that a detailed feasibility report for the Metro Rail in Madurai will be prepared.
The Finance Minister also announced that services on the Kodambakkam to Poonamallee bye pass section of the Chennai Metro Rail Project will be commenced within four years, by June, 2025 and the entire Metro Rail Project Phase 2 will be completed by December, 2026.
In parallel, this Government will speedily take up the extension of the Chennai metro Rail Project from Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus via Tambaram, he said.
Regarding Coimbatore Metro, the Finance Minister said that the establishment of a Metro Rail in Coimbatore will also be taken up at the earliest in consultation with the Union Government.
He also said that the State Government will urge the Union Government to accord early formal approval for equity participation in Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project as already committed in the Budget Speech of the Union Finance Minister, and the necessary counter part funding released at the earliest.
The work on Phase 2 of Chennai Metro project comprising three corridors for a total length of 118.9 km at an estimated cost of INR 61,843 Crores has been commenced.
Kodambakkam to Poonamallee section is a part of Corridor-4 under Phase 2 of Chennai Metro while Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus via Tambaram is an extension of already operational Blue Line under Phase-1 of Chennai Metro. This proposed 16 km extension will have 13 stations and will be constructed along GST Road as an elevated stretch.
