Kanpur Metro is the rapid transit system serving one of Uttar Pradesh’s largest industrial cities, built and run by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). Its first priority section opened in 2021, giving Kanpur a modern transit option along one of its busiest corridors, with the rest of the network under construction.
The system is being built around two corridors. The first, the Orange Line, runs from IIT Kanpur across the city and mixes an elevated priority stretch with underground sections through the dense old quarters. The second corridor is planned to cross it, giving the city a connected grid once both are complete.
UPMRC, the same agency behind Lucknow’s metro, builds and runs the Kanpur system. Current work extends the Orange Line through its underground stretch and advances the second corridor. Station openings, tunnelling milestones and contract awards arrive as construction moves ahead.
