Kolkata Metro

Operational Operator: Metro Railway Kolkata / KMRC Length: 73.4 km Official site ↗

Kolkata Metro holds a special place in Indian transit history as the country’s first metro, with services running since 1984. It is also the only metro in India operated by the Indian Railways, through Metro Railway, Kolkata. Decades after that first line, the system is expanding again with new corridors that include a landmark under-river crossing.

The network

The original Blue Line runs north to south along the spine of the city and remains the busiest corridor. The newer Green Line, the East-West Metro, carries the network under the Hooghly River through India’s first under-river transport tunnel, linking Kolkata with Howrah. Further lines, the Purple, Orange and Yellow corridors, are at various stages of construction, pushing the metro into the suburbs. Total operational length is around 73 km and growing.

Operator and what comes next

Metro Railway, Kolkata, a unit of the Indian Railways, builds and runs the system, which makes it unique among Indian metros. Work continues on the new corridors and on extending the East-West and north-south lines. Section openings, contract awards and tenders arrive as construction advances.
