Vijayawada: After giving much hype to the proposed metro rail project connecting Vijayawada and new capital of Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu seems to have backtracked on the project for reasons known only to him.

The Naidu government has suddenly cancelled the tenders called by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which is overseeing the Vijayawada metro rail project. This is the second time that the tenders have been called off since inception.

The metro project is implemented by a special purpose vehicle named as, Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC). The project which is estimated to cost around Rs 6769 crore, was awarded to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

DMRC’s successful execution of the Delhi Metro Rail project was the primary criteria to award the Vijayawada Metro Rail project to them.

According to reports, the DMRC was supposed to complete phase-1 of the project by December 2018 which consists of two corridors covering 26.03 km.

As part of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, thirteenth schedule the Government of India shall examine the feasibility of Metro Rail facility in Vishakhapatnam and Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali Metropolitan Urban Development Authority within period of one year from the appointed day and take an expeditious decision thereon.

But now with the tenders being cancelled, the project is back to square one. There is no clarity as to why they were cancelled and when the fresh tenders would be called for.

    • The project will not be constructed at all. The returns on project are very very low at 3% while all metro projects like Lucknow , Nagpur , Ahmedabad , Kochi etc are feasible due to 15-25 % . The reason is Vijayawada land and realty prices are too hyped and it is not that worth at all. I am in Bangalore and have purchased 45 lac 3 bhk flat in soutn Bangalore with all connectivity to infrastructure . In Vijayawada typically same costing over 60 lac . Incredible and independent evaluation from quantity surveyor after detailed costing of material , land are evaluated , it costed 23 lac on maximum price mark. This clearly shows how political leadership trying to manipulate the overall market. I am Dy CE that worked in DMRC and retired , settled in Bangalore. I believe based on my sources this project will not kick-start for another 2 years . For sure. The bids are cancelled two times and it’s clear evidence of some major objections by central committee is exhibiting serious flaw in feasibility conducted. Moreover Vijayawada Is a city is well connected with bus network and really don’t need a metro at all. Ideally they must built two express way to connect Vijayawada with Amravati.

      • Sir, Agree with your point, If the tenders are cancelled twice, then it becomes a point of concern from the Payment perspective to the contractors. It is not a healthy situation for mega projects like this one.
