It was in 2009 that the proposal for setting up the metro project in Indore and Bhopal was mooted. This was also the first metro rail project made on lines of New Metro Rail Policy.

Close sources reveal that in the PIB meeting there were few members who suggested having a light rail transport system. They felt that metro rail project will not be a feasible for the two locations. Many members felt that the state government should reconsider the decision. But after long deliberation, the idea of light rail transport was rejected.
Now that PIB has given a nod for financial assistance, the proposal will be sent to Union cabinet. MP government has already gone ahead and appointed a consultant for both the metro rail projects.
