NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approves Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase-2A and Phase-2B with total length of 58.19 km. The total cost of the project is expected to be INR 14,788.101 crore.

Phase-2A comprises construction of 19.75 km long elevated corridor connecting KR Puram to Central Silkboard with 13 stations while Phase-2 comprises construction of 38.44 long corridors connecting K R Puram to the Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal Junction with 17 stations on the route.

According to Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, “Once completed in the estimated 54 months, this project will play a key role in decongesting the city which contributes 40% to India’s IT exports & is home to a large number of IT parks, hubs & industries; many of which are located on the route.”

“This connectivity would provide a sustainable & efficient mode of transport enabling the city to realise its economic potential & ease traffic congestion on the roads leading to the Airport. It will also contribute to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions”, he further added.

In another news, BMRCL (Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation) will take up compensatory plantation mostly on Army land as a part of its plan to plant 4,990 saplings in May and June this year. BMRCL had received approval to axe 499 trees in 4 different locations for Phase-2 of Bangalore Metro Rail Project.

The Nurserymen Co-operative Society Limited has been entrusted with this task of compensatory plantation while High Court will actively monitor this greening exercise.
