CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has completed factory acceptence tests soon after the first TBM arrived in Chennai a week ago. According to the sources, TBM will be one of the machines building twin tunnels on a 12 km stretch between Kellys and Taramani road junction stations.
This stretch is part of corridor-3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri Sipcot of the 118.9 km phase-2. Tunnelling for phase 2, which has a 43 km underground section with 48 stations, will commence in October. The phase is expected to be ready by 2025-26.
According to the sources, TBM will be one of the two new machines that will be used by Larsen & Toubro to build tunnels in the Kellys-Taramani Road junction route. Few areas along the Kellys-Taramani road junction stations route have been barricaded and work has already started.
CMRL said that around 23 TBMs will be used in various locations on the three corridors of phase 2 to build the tunnels and complete construction faster.
