IR to promote online transactions

PoS devices are available in catering units to print printed bills and invoices that include all transactional information and answer complaints of overcharging.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Indian Railways is promoting digital means of transactions for the purchase of meals through catering units in order to support the Digital India project as 8878 static units at railway stations already have the ability to accept payments online. Currently, 596 trains have 3081 POS machines available to them. According to the Railway Ministry, POS machines have been installed in 4316 static units.

For widening the range of options available to passengers in trains, e-Catering Services have been introduced on Indian Railways. eCatering services are managed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Passengers can pre-order meals of their choice at the time of booking of e-ticket or while traveling on train using App, Call Centre, website or by calling 1323, the ministry said in a statement.

“e-Catering service is currently available at 310 Railway stations through 1755 Service Providers and 14 Food Aggregators supplying an average number of 41,844 meals per day,” the statement read.

Indian Railways has been attempting to bring down the cost of logistics to a minimum. Recent rail infrastructure projects including railways track have received significant support, as a result a pattern, a trend is clearly visible. In comparison to last year the pace of progress on railway track projects such as new lines, gauge conversion and multi-tracking (doubling/tripling) has accelerated by almost three times.

Railways constructed 1353 track kilometres (TKM) of new lines, gauge conversion and multi-tracking projects during this financial year as of September 21, 2022. It’s possible that 150 TKM will be added just in September.
