KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): The Kolkata Metro Railway announced the commencement of construction for the underground section of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor, also known as the Purple Line, on April 20. This initiative will significantly enhance urban connectivity and ease transit across the city, particularly within the southern sectors.
The construction pertains to an 8.58 km underground stretch that forms part of the larger 15.08 km Joka-Esplanade corridor. This new section will facilitate direct connections between Mominpur and Esplanade, streamlining travel and access between these two key areas of Kolkata.

The tunnelling work is scheduled to begin at Khidderpore and will extend to Victoria (Memorial) station, where advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be employed for excavation. These TBMs are well known for their precision and minimal disturbance to the surrounding environments, ensuring a smooth continuation of daily activities in the area during construction phases.
