BHOPAL (Metro Rail News): Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MPMRCL) awarded Kalpatru Projects International Limited (KPIL)-Gulermak JV a contract worth Rs. 769 crores on March 14, 2024, for the underground tunnelling and construction of Bhopal Metro’s Orange Line.

The BH-04 package of Bhopal Metro Phase 1 involves twin tunnels spanning 3.39 km. It links Sindhi Colony Station to Aish Bagh Crossing Station via two underground stations, Bhopal Junction Station and Nadra Bus Stand. MPMRCL mandates that KPIL—Gulermak JV use at least two tunnel boring machines for six tunnels.

Construction deadline –  3.5 years. 

Assignment

The project entails designing and constructing twin tunnels (Up & Down by Shield TBM), cut & cover, cross passages with or without sumps, ramps, and two underground stations for the Bhopal Metro project, including architectural finishing, water supply, sanitary installation, and drainage works along the underground section from Chainage 28+375 to 31+765 for Bhopal Metro Rail Project.

Construction is supported by financing, secured through a €400 million, i.e. Rs. 3,584 crore (approx.) loan from the European Investment Bank in December 2019.

Package BH-04 marks the final civil package for Bhopal Metro’s Orange Line, following previous awards for BH-01 (AIIMS to Subhash Nagar’s viaduct), BH-02 (AIIMS to Subhash Nagar’s stations), BH-03 (Subhash Nagar to Aish Bagh Ramp and Sindhi Colony Ramp to Karond Circle) and BH-06 (construction of a ramp leading to the Subhash Nagar Depot).

The financial bid opening remains pending for the Blue Line’s Package BH-05, which involves constructing the 12.915 km elevated line between Bhadbhada Chauraha and Ratnagiri Tiraha.
