KANPUR (Metro Rail News): For the construction of the tunnel of Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section, the third part of the tunnel boring machine ‘tail shield’ was landed on 18th June in the launching shaft at Bada Chauraha. The 30-tonne ‘tail shield’ was unloaded in the shaft between June 16 and 18 in two parts with the help of state-of-the-art crawler cranes.

Apart from this, ‘Screev Conveyor’ and ‘Ring Erector’ were also successfully lowered into the shaft. While the screev conveyor is used to remove soil from the tunnel during excavation, ring segments are positioned inside the tunnel with the help of ring erectors.

The tail shield will now be assembled on the cradle with the ‘middle shield’ and ‘front shield’ already unloaded in the shaft, which was lowered into the shaft on June 12 and June 13 respectively. Along with this, so far, three parts of the TBM have been unloaded in the shaft, after which the ‘cutter head’, after interconnecting, will also be unloaded in the launching shaft soon.

Presently, passenger services of Kanpur Metro are operational on the 9 KMs long Priority Section (IIT- Motijheel). Under the 23 KMs long Corridor-I (IIT-Naubasta), beyond Motijheel Metro Station; the underground stretch of the corridor is being constructed in two phases; the first one is comprising Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha & Nayaganj Metro Stations; and the second one is comprising Kanpur Central, Jhakarkati, and Transport Nagar Metro Stations. After this 7KMs long underground section, around 5KMs long section between Baradevi and Naubasta will be elevated.
