KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): On Wednesday, Titagarh Wagons Ltd (TWL) announced that their partnership with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has made them the only fully Indian consortium among the five contenders for the Rs 72,000 crore Vande Bharat train contract. TWL, which is a significant engineering and wagon company, also revealed their plans to invest Rs 700 crore in capital expenditure over the next 4-5 years to enhance their production capacity and associated infrastructure.
According to Prithish Chowdhary, Director of Marketing and Business Development at TWL, the company, having formed a partnership with BHEL, is one of the five bidders for the Vande Bharat contract. He expressed optimism, noting that TWL and BHEL are the only truly Indian consortium since both partners are Indian companies.
As said by a senior official from the company, the forthcoming steel body plant located in Uttarpara, West Bengal, will enhance TWL’s coach-building expertise in both steel and aluminium bodies.
The remaining bidders for the contract are Siemens, a German-based company in partnership with BEML, Medha Engineering, in partnership with Swiss company Stadler Rail, Russian Transmashholding, and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. The French company Alstom is bidding on its own.
The Vande Bharat contract involves the provision of 200 trains that encompass design, production, testing, and commissioning, in addition to a 35-year maintenance agreement. The entire project is anticipated to be finalized within the next 3-4 years, with an approximate worth of Rs 72,000 crores for the 200 trains.
Chowdhary commented on the expansion of capacity, stating that the short-term objective is to increase the production of wagons to 700 units per month by March of this year. Furthermore, the capacity will gradually be expanded in phases over time, with the ultimate goal of reaching 800-900 units per month].
