TAMILNADU (Metro Rail News): Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) has been declared the lowest bidder for implementing the ABS system in the Southern Railway project, estimated at ₹239 crores. The Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) system, crucial in this project, is designed to manage train traffic by automating stop signals.

The technology enables consecutive trains to travel safely in the same direction, significantly reducing the possibility of collisions.

Project Details

RVNL will implement the ABS system across the Jolarpettai junction to the Erode junction stretch of Southern Railway’s Salem division (Salem division is one of the six divisions of the Southern Railway zone). The project aims for completion within 900 days, ensuring a swift and substantial upgrade to the current signalling mechanisms.

In addition to this project, Southern Railway has also selected RVNL’s joint venture with KRDCL for a ₹439 crore initiative. This JV, with RVNL owning 49% and KRDCL the majority at 51%, focuses on the redevelopment of the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway station through an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, with a 42-month deadline for execution.

Market Response

Following the announcement, RVNL’s shares saw a noticeable rise, closing at ₹284.45 on the BSE, which is an increase of ₹7.15, or 2.58%.

These projects signify RVNL’s growing influence in the railway infrastructure sector, highlighting its role in modernising India’s rail systems for enhanced passenger safety and more efficient railway operations.
